In addition, a plastic factory was
annexed to the Sabhan’s dairy plant, manufacturing different
plastic containers and cups to be at the disposal of
production department as per standard specifications. The
old plant at Shuweikh was renovated and modernized to
produce large varieties of ice cream in different shapes and
sizes.
Destruction of the Factory As a consequence of the Iraqi
invasion, KDD’s business was seriously affected. The factory
continued working even after the invasion by Iraqi forces on
2nd August 1990 and it was only when allied bombing
commenced on 16th January 1991 that operations were closed.
Between then and the end of the war on 26th February 1991,
Iraqi soldiers occupied the factory.
On 14th February 1991, war planes dropped incendiary bombs
on the road alongside the front of the factory. Very severe
damage was caused to the ground (upper) floor of the Sabhan
factory. Three days later, warplanes returned and bombed the
previously undamaged southern section of the ground floor
and this was also destroyed. As a result of both these
bombing raids, the manufacturing facilities on the ground
floor were completely destroyed.
During
the period of occupation, the turnover was depressed and
subsequent to the explosion damage at the premises,
production was seriously disrupted. Despite all odds, KDD
continued production to cater to the needs of the Kuwaitis
and Experts residing in the country. The company had to sell
its products at a loss since the trading was allowed only on
the Iraqi Dinar which had extremely low valuation.
In November 1991 and after the war, KDD was the first local
non-oil industrial company to start full-fledged operation.
KDD’s success in exceeding the difficult circumstances
during the invasion and rebuilding period, was due to
awareness, forethought, good organizing and a deep feeling
of responsibility towards the common goal of KDD. No wonder
that in spite of all odds today KDD in
the short span of 40 years has developed and expanded from a
small dairy company producing 2000 liters of milk per day to
a major producer of dairy products, juice and ice cream in
the Arabian Gulf.
